Girl Team Mobile is an app development studio and publishing house specializing in the creation of empowering, entertaining and educational interactive e-books with predominately female protagonists. How cool is that?! They create a customized reading experience packed with fascinating characters, delightful plots, and interactive design.

“The goal is to encourage positive values, explore diversity and inspire confidence”

Big Hair is Girl Team Mobile’s first book and app.  Inspired by the author, Arynetta Floyzelle’s own transition to loving her natural hair – Big Hair tells the story of Effie Monroe, a sassy naturalista whose thick, crazy, curly, super-sized hair definitely makes her stand out from the crowd.

Supported by a colorful cast of friends, family, and community members Effie embarks on a journey to learn self-acceptance and the beauty of diversity.

Books That Portray Children’s Natural Hair: Princess Truly Review

Books That Portray Children's Natural Hair

I’ve gotten D several books that portray children’s natural hair over the years, so that she can see kids in stories and princesses in fairly tales that have hair like hers. I think it is important for kids to see fellow children that look like them as well as kids who don’t (variety is good, after all the world is full of diverse people) in stories and movies. I think most of you will agree that straight-haired blonde princesses seem to be in a lot of the fairy tales, which is one of the reasons why I loved newest book in our collection “Princess Truly and the Hungry Bunny Problem”.. just look at Princess Truly’s  hair!

While having positive characters that look similar to them are important for confidence and self-esteem, even more important are the morals, values and lessons in the story. Princess Truly is a clever girl who loves to read books, help her friends and figure out solutions to the problems they encounter.

D made the comment to me that she’s always wanted to be a princess and she loved how she felt like a Princess when she was reading the book…like she was Princess Truly. I just love that Kelly’s words were able to pull her in, capture her imagination and allowed her to place herself in the story…that is what good stories do.

D wanted to do her own review of the book, so here she is in her video debut telling you about her favorite parts in Princess Truly and the Hungry Bunny Problem:
