Coconut Oil For Your Skin: Recipe EBook Review and Giveaway

Natural coconut walnut oil

You all know I use natural hair care products on D’s hair and that I have dabbled a little bit in making my own concoctions here and there with our essential oils for hair care and natural remedies for eczema. But I recently got the chance to read “Coconut Oil For Your Skin” by Jennifer of Hybrid Rasta Mama.  This ebook is full of awesome recipes for hair and skin. It provides a nice introduction to carrier oils and which ones are best for the various skin types. She also breaks down the physical and emotional benefits of each essential oil. Of course there are many awesome recipes in the book that I can’t wait to try more of. So, why is coconut oil incorporated in each recipe? Jennifer says:

Coconut Oil is the perfect carrier oil to use when making personal care products and toiletries. This is because coconut oil is:

  • anti-bacterial
  • anti-fungal
  • anti-inflammatory
  • anti-microbial/Infection Fighting
  • an antioxidant
  • anti-viral

This book provides recipes for:

  • Personal Hygiene Products
  • Bath Products
  • Shampoos
  • Conditioners
  • Hair Oil Treatments
  • Scalp Treatments
  • Skin Care
  • Facial Scrubs, Masks, Creams and Cleansers
  • Lip Balm Making 101

and much more.

Natural Remedy for Eczema

When Baby Boy was just an infant he had some eczema patches on his face, they itched him terribly and he would scratch his face to the point of making it bleed. Sad smile
Since, he was so tiny I was hesitant to use anything on his sensitive face, I just tried to keep it washed and clean with a warm wet wash cloth, at that age all I used to bathe him with was water. Here is a photo of him that shows the irritated skin on his face. He was just 3 weeks old in this photo:

Sweet-Aromas Aromatherapy

What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is when natural oils are extracted from flowers, stems, leaves, roots or other parts of a plant to enhance and assist with psychological and physical well-being. The inhaled aroma from these “essential” oils is believed to stimulate brain function. Essential oils can also be absorbed through the skin, where they travel through the bloodstream and can promote whole-body healing. Aromatherapy is used for a variety of applications, including pain relief, mood enhancement, relaxation, romance enhancement, sinuses, healthy hair growth and more!

Natural Remedy for Insect Bites and Natural Insect Repellent

bug bite remedy

Summer is rapidly approaching, that means sunny days filled with the crystal clear water of swimming pools, thirst quenching lemonade and unfortunately for some of us, blood sucking insects and their gruesome bites.

I want to share with you our homemade, natural ointment to soothe and heal those bites. To create this ointment I use a natural massage oil GEL, which gives the consistency of an ointment, but you can use any natural oil or lotion that you have.

natural gel for bug bites

I put 2 oz of this gel into a container and I mix 10 drops each of:

  • lavender
  • citronella
  •  tea tree
  • patchouli
  • lemon

essential oils to equal 50 drops per 2 ounces.

Essential Oils for Hair Care

Essential oils have many therapeutic properties. There are several that are excellent for common hair and scalp issues. Below is a list of essential oils with benefits regarding hair care and the recipe for our own essential oil hair care mix.

Essential Oils for Hair Care

>>  Cedarwood- used for eczema, Seborrheic dermatitis aka dandruff, hair loss, dry hair
>> Tea Tree – good for dry scalp or dandruff, both. For dandruff apply the oil for about 15 mins then shampoo as normal.
>> Patchouli – eczema, dandruff
>> Rosemary – dry skin, dry hair, hair loss, dandruff
>> Thyme – hair loss
>> Sage – cleansing, eczema, hair loss, dry hair
>> Lavender – hair loss
>> Chamomile – fragile/damaged hair, eczema, dandruff
>> Geranium – dry/damaged hair
>> Peppermint and Eucalyptus – dry hair, tingling effect that stimulates the hair follicles and promotes growth

For our hair oil I mix lavender, chamomile, rosemary, geranium, sage and peppermint with Jojoba oil. Jojoba oil is one of the best carrier oil to use when mixing oils for hair. The recipe calls for 50 drops of essential oils per 2 oz of jojoba oil. I like to use more lavender, chamomile and rosemary and a less peppermint. I’ve noticed too much peppermint makes the mix tingle too much on my daughter’s scalp and makes her scratch her head. You can tailor the recipe to your needs, but keep it at 50 drops of essential oil (or less) per 2oz of carrier oil.

When it comes to selecting essential oils you should only use high quality, 100% pure and natural oils extracted by steam distillation or cold expression. I use Lotus Touch brand oils their products are formulated with certified organic ingredients.
*A word of caution: Essential oils are very concentrated and should not be applied to your skin unless they are diluted.*
