I Love My Hair Book Review

I Love My Hair by Natasha Anastasia Tarpley is a wonderful children’s book that teaches self-acceptance. The story is told by a little girl named Keyana. She tells of how it hurts to have her hair combed even though her mother tries to be gentle.
As her mother rubs coconut oil on her scalp and combs her hair, she reminds Keyana of how lucky she is to be able to wear her hair in so many different styles. Keyana talks about the struggles of dealing with being teased for her hair but learns to embrace and celebrate her hair as part of her African American heritage. In the end she accepts and love her hair. It is a truly great book and anytime my daughter says “I wish I had straight hair”, I get this book out and by the time it is read she is back to loving and appreciating her hair just the way it is. The illustrations in the book, done by E.B. Lewis, are beautiful and creative, making it a very colorful book. We love “I Love My Hair”!

  5. That's an awesome story. :) My daughter has this book too, and to this day it's one of her favorites. I think part of the reason she loves it so much is because she likes that it matches the song from Sesame Street…lol. What most surprised me is the honesty and how they talk in the book about doing hair not being uncomfortable or painful. I think that it's important to tell stories that are honest like this and I love that they did it in a fun and creative way. :)
