Essential oils have many therapeutic properties. There are several that are excellent for common hair and scalp issues. Below is a list of essential oils with benefits regarding hair care and the recipe for our own essential oil hair care mix.
>> – used for eczema, Seborrheic dermatitis aka dandruff, hair loss, dry hair
>> Tea Tree – good for dry scalp or dandruff, both. For dandruff apply the oil for about 15 mins then shampoo as normal.
>> Patchouli – eczema, dandruff
>> Rosemary – dry skin, dry hair, hair loss, dandruff
>> Thyme – hair loss
>> Sage – cleansing, eczema, hair loss, dry hair
>> Lavender – hair loss
>> Chamomile – fragile/damaged hair, eczema, dandruff
>> Geranium – dry/damaged hair
>> Peppermint and Eucalyptus – dry hair, tingling effect that stimulates the hair follicles and promotes growth
For our hair oil I mix lavender, chamomile, rosemary, geranium, sage and peppermint with Jojoba oil. Jojoba oil is one of the best carrier oil to use when mixing oils for hair. The recipe calls for 50 drops of essential oils per 2 oz of jojoba oil. I like to use more lavender, chamomile and rosemary and a less peppermint. I’ve noticed too much peppermint makes the mix tingle too much on my daughter’s scalp and makes her scratch her head. You can tailor the recipe to your needs, but keep it at 50 drops of essential oil (or less) per 2oz of carrier oil.
When it comes to selecting essential oils you should only use high quality, 100% pure and natural oils extracted by steam distillation or cold expression. I use Lotus Touch brand oils their products are formulated with certified organic ingredients.
*A word of caution: Essential oils are very concentrated and should not be applied to your skin unless they are diluted.*

i just started a blog for my daughter who has eczema, so i am very careful what i use on her hair. the oils i am interested in would be all the ones associated. She does have dry hair but it's not damaged. i believe it's dry because of the eczema. http://www.diaryofahairprincess.blogspot.com hope i win the giveaway!
I follow your blog and I am a FB friend.

Great post! EO's are so interesting to me. I love learning more about them. Lavendar is also has good cleansing properties, so can be used in between wash days if desired.
Oh goodness… have you smelled patchouli?!?! ICK!!! My most loathed scent EVER!! and it has so many redeeming qualities! But I just can't get over the smell. *shudders* lol

Yes, i love learning about them too, they have so many great therapeutic and healing properties for a number of things!
I don't mind most of the scents, though, I like natural/earthy smells, so they don't bother me.
awesome info thanks for sharing
Eczema is not 100% treatable but you can always reduce its symptoms by the use of hydrocortisone and other topical steroids. ;”*”

Thank you for your comment Brian, but the point of this post is to provide natural/safe alternatives to topical steroids and other OTC drugs.
Jojoba oil is really great for treating acne. It sort of unclogs the pores by dissolving hardened sebum. .”*.,

People with atopic dermatitis often have asthma or seasonal allergies. There is often a family history of allergies such as asthma, hay fever, or eczema. People with atopic dermatitis often test positive to allergy skin tests. However, atopic dermatitis is not caused by allergies.
