DIY Yarn Braids aka Genie Locs

Yarn Braids aka Genie Locs

yarn braids tutorial

I’ve been wanting to try yarn braids aka genie locs on D’s hair for some time now and even more so since we had to cut so much of her hair off. While I would love to try something that looks more real, like hair extensions, I don’t have the skills for that just yet and since high end salons like Rush Reading are out of the questions, we had to settle for some DIY yarn braids. Yarn Braids aka Genie Locs can be a good protective style if the hair is well taken care of during the duration of the style. Since yarn can dry the hair our it is uber important to moisturize daily. I will talk about how we moisturize and what we use later on in the post but first I’m going talk a little bit about the yarn braid installation process.

Items Needed for Yarn Braids aka Genie Locs:

>>Acrylic yarn (I used the Red Heart Brand) **Do not use wool yarn, this can loc the hair

>>A thick moisturizing cream (I used Bee Mine Luscious)

>>A holding products/gel (I used Curls of the World Just the Flax gel)

>>Spray bottle of water for the yarn

>>Wide tooth comb

>>Pintail comb

>>Hair Clips

>>Lighter (for burning the ends of the yarn so it doesn’t fray)

>>Scissors for cutting the yarn (oops, left those out of the picture)

items for yarn braids

How to Put in Yarn Braids aka Genie Locs:

  • See how post on How to Cut Yarn for Yarn Braids
  • To prep for the yarn braids I washed D’s hair, deep conditioned and then moisturized and banded it in 4 sections (parted down the middle and again from ear to ear, making 4 sections, 2 in the front and 2 in the back).
  • When it was time to start the process I did one section a time starting in the back at the nape of her neck. I applied a generous amount of Bee Mine Luscious moisturizer to EACH small section before I added the yarn and braided.
  • I used 3 pieces of yarn per braid, which I sprayed with water prior to adding it to the hair (this helps keep it from drying the hair out).

There are several different techniques that can be used for putting in yarn braids. What I did and what I recommend is trying a few of the different techniques to see what is easiest and what works best for you. I learned by watching the following 3 yarn braids videos: BlackOnyx, AfrikanHairGod and MsChanda.

Tips for Yarn Braids aka Genie Locs

The entire process was trial and error for me, this was the first time ever doing yarn braids and it was a learning experience. Next time there are a few things I will do differently and they are:

>>Smaller Braids – the braids I did this time were kind of medium-ish sized box braids, I think smaller braids will work better.

>>No Parts – instead of parting I will just gather small, random  sections of hair for the each braid.

>>Tighter wrapping of the yarn – I was worried about wrapping the yarn too tight at the root so I kept it fairly loose, next time I won’t be so afraid to make them tighter because the yarn does loosen up.

>>Use a gel/holding product in addition to the moisturizer – When I first started the braids I wasn’t using a holding product, only moisturizer, then ends of her hair were poking out of the braids, so definitely use a holding product.

Overall I am happy with the yarn braids and D just loves them! Have you ever done yarn braids? Are you thinking about it? If you have D and I would love to see photo’s! Please share them on our fan page!

The Importance of Clarifying Shampoo

It is imperative to the health of the hair and scalp to occasionally cleanse with a clarifying shampoo. Products can build up on the hair, itchy scalp and even scalp infections can result from not properly washing.  Many people think you must use a shampoo with harsh detergents such as sulfates to clarify the hair, but this is simply not true. In fact, it is  important to carefully choose your clarifying shampoo, as many of them out there can strip and dry out the hair.  I’ve found that the Bee Mine Purity Rhassoul Clay Clarifying Bar is an excellent clarifier that doesn’t contain harsh chemicals and ingredients known to dry out the hair.

Bee Mine - Purity Rhassoul Clay Clarifying BarBee Mine - Purity Rhassoul Clay Clarifying Bar

This clarifying bar can be use on any hair type. I use this shampoo on my hair which is fine, straight and gets oily pretty quickly, every time I shampoo, about every 2 or 3 days. This shampoo allows me to go longer between washes by keeping my hair from becoming too oily. I use this on my daughter naturally curly hair as a clarifying shampoo about once a month.

Pictured below on the left is my hair after using the Bee Mine Clarifying Shampoo Bar, their Avocado Cream Conditioner and a spritz or 2 of their Juicy Spritz. On the right is my daughters hair after using the Bee Mine Clarifying Shampoo Bar, Avocado Cream Conditioner and Deja’s Hair Milk.

This shampoo bar can last us up to 6 months. I cut the bar in half to make it stretch, with me using it every 2-3 days on myself (note: I have short hair) and once a month on my daughter one 1/2 of the bar lasted almost 3 months. Well worth the $8.00!

I actually don’t have a photo for Day 2 and I apologize, but I did stretch out this wash and go for 3 days, the final day she rocked it in a ponytail with a Twirlyz

My thoughts:
This stuff just slid through her hair and made it feel like silk when I applied it…must be the silk powder in the ingredients, her curls were so soft, well defined and moisturized with little shrinkage.. I think the photo’s speak for themselves. If you missed it, check out yesterdays post using their Light Down and Out Styles. You can find Blended Beauty and Blended Cutie products on their website.

Wash and Go Series: Curls of the World Defining Gel

This wash and go was done using Curls of the World Just the Flax Defining Gel. As with each wash and go shown in this series I washed, conditioned/detangled, then applied the product by raking my fingers through D’s hair in sections and let it air dry. The cornrows had been done on dry, stretched hair prior to the wash and go on the rest of her hair.

My thoughts:
I was pleased with these results, her curls were soft and well defined. Most gel give a stiff hold, are sticky and somewhat gooey, but this gel is more of a thick liquid, not sticky at all and did not make the hair stiff. Her hair stayed well moisturized throughout the duration of the day and the frizz was, for the most part, kept to a minimum. What are your thoughts? Have you tried this product or any products from Curls of the World?

The next day she was able to rock a ponytail, there was still some great definition and her hair was super soft.

Don’t forget you can see her hair with no product in it for comparison of results.

My thoughts:
I love how the Bee Mine Curly Butter leaves her hair so incredibly soft and yet still does such a great job at defining her curls. There is obviously no stiffness or crunch to her curls with the Curly Butter. There are no flakes or residual product feel, just soft luscious curls. I love the coconut scent, it’s not too strong, but it lingers in the hair and I just love to smell of D’s hair when she has this product in it, lol and she loves her “Bee Products”, too…
