Hair CarnivalIt is that time again, we’ve put together another copy cat hair carnival. This time I copied some pretty girl hairstyles from the blogger over at Pretty Hairstyles for Girls. This is the style I chose to recreate:

Our version: I did 2 cornrows on the sides meeting into 1 braid, a really easy and cute hairstyle for girls that worked well with our new Lilla Rose clip :)

I also saw several styles that we already had in common and I wanted to share those as well.

DIY Hair Ribbon Accessories Tutorial

Welcome to this months hair carnival, where we are showing off our crafting skills and giving you a chance to win some items! Now, I have tried and failed miserably at making boutique style hair bows and even just simple hair bows to be honest. But I have seen fancy hair accessories made from ribbon and ponytail holders on sell for $5+ and though, I could make those! They are very simple to make and I’m going to show you how!

DIY Hair Ribbon Accessories Tutorial

Materials used:

  • Ribbon
  • Scissors
  • Black Metal-less ponytail holders
  • Lighter (used to seal the edges of the ribbon to prevent fraying)
  • Sewing Needle
  • Thread
  • Hot Glue Gun

Lay out your evenly cut pieces of ribbon:

Take a needle and thread the pieces of ribbon together and attach them to the pony tail holder:

Take a piece of ribbon and tie a loose knot, like so:

Use the glue gun and/or tie it around the center:

Easy Heart Hairstyles for Valentine’s Day

I have always loved heart hairstyles. I’m not sure what to call this one…the “topsy tail braided ponytail heart” maybe?

braided heart hairstyle

1. I started out by parting the heart with the metal end of a rat tail comb (hold the comb as if it were a pencil and you are “drawing” the heart).

2. Next I ponytailed the section of hair from the heart part.

3. I divided the ponytail into 2 equal sections, braided each section and used our hair beader tool to “topsy tail” each braid.

4. I tied the braids together using some ribbon and gathered the rest of her hair into a ponytail and braided it.

Here is a look back at some styles I’ve done in the past for Valentine’s Day:

Cute Holiday Hairstyles

We have used Curlformers several times and we love them! They make for some very cute holiday hairstyles  (Reflect on our original Curlformers review, D’s Mothers’ Day Criss Cross Headband Curlformers’ Hairstyle and my short hairstyle done with Curlformers). We brought out the Curlformers twice last month for the holidays. First for Christmas photos and again for her Christmas Day style.

I did the first style with our long and wide set, but as it turned out her hair has grown a lot since we used them last and I actually had to double up on the Curlformers, lol, I used every single long and wide curler and all of our short and wide curlers to ensure all of her hair was going to be curled. I did this set on damp hair using Bee Mine Curly Butter (use discount code UTHM12HOT to get 10% off Bee Mine Products).

And it worked! Here are some photos from the Christmas shoot:Cute Hairstyles for the Holidays

By the time Christmas rolled around we had gotten our Extra Long and Wide styling kit and used it. For this set I pulled her hair half up and used some of our Curling Custard.

Cindy Lou Who Hairstyle Tutorial

This hairstyle was inspired by Cindy Lou Who from the Grinch Who Stole Christmas, this was the theme for our holiday parade, (which was actually canceled at the last minute do to the rain…but we had gotten all dressed up and ready so we took some photo’s).

Cindy Lou Who Hairstyle Tutorial

I used a party hat to create this style. I stuff the party hat with paper and taped the bottom (to keep the paper in), this made the hat stiff and ensured that it didn’t collapse.
-First, parted out the section in the back to braid and left it down. *TIP*: I had to improvise by doing the braided sections in the back, rather than on the sides, because when I first tried the style, the weight of her hair kept pulling the hat down, keeping her hair from staying on the top of her head like it needed to be. So, I put two braids in the back and then pinned them up on the sides.
-Then I placed the party hat on the top center of her head and covered it with her hair.
-I used pony tail holder to around her hair and the top of the party hat to keep everything in place.

Winterize Your Hair: Natural Hair Care Tips for Winter

Natural Hair Care Tips for Winter

The winter months can be especially hard on the hair, the cold winds can dry it out quickly. Here are 6 quick tips for winter hair care:

Natural Hair Care Tips for Winter

1. Use heavier products. I use coconut oil to moisturize D’s hair during the summer months and olive oil during the winter. I tried shea butter back in the summer and it was too heavy for her hair, but I am excited to give it another try during these colder months. A tip I got from Rock it NAPPtural!,  products that are too heavy in the warmer months might be perfect in the winter months.
2. Shampoo less, condition more. Use a good hydrating conditioner more often and don’t shampoo as often.
3. Wear satin lined hats. Cotton and wool can dry out the hair, this is one reason satin bonnets, pillow cases and satin lined hats and beanies are recommended. This is something I have learned this year, so I have added it my list of things to do: to go back and put satin liners in D’s’ beanies and hats.
4. Avoid heat…this includes blow dryers, curling irons, flat irons, and long hot showers (even though they are amazing in the colder months)…the heat will dry your hair out.
5. Wear protective styles….bun, braids, twists, cornrows, bantu knots, etc… are considered protective styles
6. Deep condition
