Mother, Wife, Business Woman and Blogger: Doing It All

I usually don’t get too personal on this blog, but when a recent questions was posed to me, I felt like sharing it with you all. I was recently asked "You are so together, how do you do it all? What’s your secret". These questions are in reference to me being a mother, wife, business woman and blogger. The simple answer is: I don’t. The truth is I may look like I have it all together, but I don’t. My to-do list is a mile long and growing. My house is rarely spotless. And I still have a lot of goals I’d like to achieve with my business and my blogs. I fee like there are never enough hours in the day and not enough time to spend with my loved ones. I have learned a few things along the way that have helped me find a little bit of a balance in all of the craziness of raising kids, maintaining a household, working online from home and most recently going back to work outside the home.

Keeping it together

Tips for keeping it together:

Stay focused on the task at hand. I’ve found that multitasking is not always so efficient . There were times when I would have 2 or 3 blog posts pulled up, writing them, editing photos for each one, emailing businesses, engaging on various social media platforms, etc…not a good idea. Tackle one thing at a time, so you don’t get distracted and end up working all day only to feel like you didn’t accomplish anything. I, personally, know how hard it can be to stay focused on something when there is a 2 year old running around, needing a drink, a diaper change, or a cuddle (I mean who can resist a toddler cuddle?), but knocking out one household chore or work-related task at a time can get more things done.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help sometimes. My oldest child, D, has chores. The hubby and I take turns cooking and cleaning up the kitchen. And lets face it sometimes we all need a break, this is when I send the kids to grandma’s, they love going and she loves having them, I am very blessed with a mother who helps me out with my kids and let’s them spend the occasional weekend at her house when I am feeling overwhelmed with all the things that need to be done.
Remember what is truly important. 10 years from now is it really going to matter that you responded to that email right away or that you folded the laundry as soon as the dryer buzzed? What about if you sat down and read your child their favorite story, would that matter in 10 years? Family. If you never make time for them, what’s the point?
-Take time for yourself. Even if it is just a few minutes here and there, you need "me time" to rejuvenate.

terrible twos

I don’t have a picture perfect life, if there is such a thing. My kids aren’t perfect angels all the time (see above photo). And while I would never want my life to be filmed for the world to see like Tia and Tamera’s reality show (which is starting soon, but more about that later on in the post), I love my life and I feel truly blessed, through the ups and downs, the trials and tribulations, it is what it is and I have my family by my side.

they love each other2

Taking a peak into the lives of other real moms has helped me realize that nothing is completely perfect all of the time and sometimes it helps to watch and be reminded of that. Tia and Tamera are mom’s, wives and business women themselves, who don’t always have it all together. So, if you need a reminder that you aren’t the only one tune in to Season 3 of Tia and Tamera, it starts this Sunday, July 14th at 8/7C on Style.

Cornrow Hairstyle Tutorial

Criss Cross Over Cornrow Hairstyles

Both of these cornrow hairstyles are similar and basically start off the same way. Your parts should resemble a pie or pizza.

hair parting diagram

criss cross cornrow hairstyle

(For steps 1-3 refer back to the hair parting diagram above)
Step 1: Part hair in four sections. (front to back, ear to ear) clip each section to keep them separate

Step 2: starting with the right front section and from the center point, I parted diagonal so that I had two triangles.

Step 3: I then split those two triangles in half from the center point making 4 triangles in that 1 section. Make sure you keep the 4 triangles separate.

Step 4: starting w/ the 2 triangles at the top make a set of criss crossed cornrows (if you’re not sure how to do that see our criss cross cornrow tutorial) going to the center of the head, w/ the bottom two make 2 regular cornrows going to the center of the head.

Step 5: repeat steps 2 & 3 on the left front section. Once top portion is complete, secure w/ an ouchless band.

Step 6: untie back right section and split into 4 triangles like we did on the top and just cornrow downward.

Step 7 repeat on the other side and accessorize as you like.

Step 4: Make 2 sets of criss-crossed cornrows going to the center of the head in 3 of the sections(top, bottom left). with the bottom right section
make two sets of criss-crossed cornrows going downward.

Step 5: secure the cornrows going to the center into a bun on the top of the head. Accessorize as you like!

Pantene Truly Natural Review

If you’ve been around the hair care world at all you are probably familiar with the term “PJ” or “product junkie”. A product junkie is one who, even though they have their favorites and staple products, can’t help but try new products occasionally out of curiosity. When I heard about Pantene’s Truly Natural line I was curious and had to give it a try! (Yes, I am a self proclaimed Product Junkie).

Pantene Truly Natural Review

There are 5 products in the Pantene Truly Natural Collection:

    • Clarifying Shampoo
    • Deep Conditioner
    • Co-Wash Cleansing Conditioner
    • Defining Curls Custards
    • Shine Serum with Argan Oil

The shampoo in this series is thick and creamy, I was pleasantly surprised by its texture and ability to cleanse without stripping the hair. It does contain sulfates, but didn’t seem to dry her hair out. Overall I like this shampoo, but plan to err on the side of caution and only use it once a month or so for clarifying. Both conditioners are thick, creamy and silky in texture, they are decent conditioners both with a little slip, I do prefer those with a little more slip for an easier detangling process. The defining custard is also thick and creamy in texture, I used this product for a wash n go on D and had good results (photo’s below). The product defined her curls and left them soft and bouncy…none of that stiff and sticky feeling that we dislike so much. There was an itsy bit of frizz, but it happens. The serum I actually tried on mine and D’s hair and well..it is mine now. I love it. It leaves my hair so soft, silky and shiny but not oily and greasy. I love that it is thicker than just plain argan oil, so it doesn’t drip or run as easily.  I do prefer to use just straight argan oil in D’s hair though, another reason I jacked the serum for myself. With a fresh clean scent, these products smell great… D says they smell like flowers (and she loves flowers!).

On to the results and photo’s (if you’d like to see a photo of D’s natural hair with no product in it for comparison click here) …

I washed D’s hair using the Pantene Truly Natural Clarifying Shampoo, I decided to try out the Co-wash condish as well, then followed with the Truly Natural deep conditioner. I used my fingers and a wide tooth shower comb to detangle her hair in the shower. Once she was out I added some of our usual moisturizer, I followed that up with the Truly Natural Shine Serum, then proceeded to rake the Defining Curls Custard through her hair with my fingers.

Pantene Natural lineI let her hair completely air dry:

I pulled her hair onto a loose bun and covered in with her satin sleep bonnet. The next morning I took it down and here are the results:

Pantene Naturals

Overall, I found the line ok, I do prefer to use products with more natural ingredients. They do contain coconut oil and argan oil, which I love and conveniently the Pantene Truly Natural line is readily available at Wal-Mart and other local retail stores with products in the natural series starting at $4.99…not bad at all.

"We brought home our daughter from Ethiopia in 2010.  I had no idea what I was doing when it came to her hair (thankfully it was short) so I hit the internet to try and figure things out.  I found some great sites but discovered that when it came to finding the fun stuff like beads and barrettes there was nothing in my area.  So, I decided to start Lily and Beads."
